Copper wire, magnolia grandiflora leaf, magnet, wood, stepper motor

2014 · Halle nord — Genève

Three wooden rosettes are suspended from the ceiling of the space. They rotate slowly at a constant speed. From each rosette hang thin copper wires. At the end of each wire is a dried Magnolia Grandiflora leaf. The wire passes through the leaf from side to side like a stitch. The leaves are suspended horizontally, grazing the floor and the magnets placed upon it.

The copper wire, traversed by an audio current (here, the sound of a flowing stream), vibrates slightly as it passes near a magnet. The dried leaf then acts as a membrane, amplifying this vibration, much like the functioning of a loudspeaker.

Operating in a rather high frequency range, the sound remains extremely faint. To perceive it, the installation requires of its visitors a moment of stillness and silence.
