Waiting for the Ground

Plant leaf, copper wire, magnet, audio player, amplifier

2017 · Ural Industrial Biennial — Kyshtym (RU)

A sound wave (an electric current) is transmitted through the wires. An electromagnetic interaction occurs between the current and the magnets, placed as close as possible to the wires without touching them. The dried leaves resting on the wires act as membranes, making a faint sound perceptible.

The sound evokes the murmur of running water. It is emitted at a low volume, requiring attentive listening from those present. The suspended copper wires form a structure that invites slow movement and heightened awareness, while intensifying the notions of space and boundary. The “riverbed” is drawn by the natural curve formed by the weight of each wire, each one precisely adjusted to remain as close as possible to its magnet.
