Copper wires, honesty plant, magnets, organ

2012 · Abbatiale de Bellelay — Jura

Within the Bellelay Abbey — a Baroque church deconsecrated more than two centuries ago — 1,122 copper wires are suspended from the ceiling. At each end, a few centimeters above visitors’ heads, hang a small cylindrical magnet and a dried honesty (Lunaria annua) leaf. A faint, bright, high-pitched vibration fills the space. As one moves carefully through the installation, subtle variations in sound become perceptible — each element resonating slightly differently due to its unique form.

The emptiness of the vast interior is delicately saturated by the dense alignment of the wires. In parallel, every fifteen minutes, a simple organ chord resonates through the building. It fills the space, holds for four minutes, then slowly fades away. This suspended chord invites visitors to adjust their position within the architecture, to sense how a seemingly constant tone changes as it propagates through space.
